"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is immediately more inky and balsamic in terms of aromas. As soon as you lift the wine to your nose, you get pretty tones of blackberry, cassis, rosemary essence, licorice and a touch of medicinal herb. I love when Sangiovese produces those elegant aromas, and for that reason, this wine stands tall among the three single-vineyard expressions from Marco Pallanti and Castello di Ama. It shows fiber, richness and lasting structure with a very well-managed quality of tannins."  (Monica Larner)

Offers stunning aromas of black cherry, blackberry and violet, with ripe, sweet fruit on the palate, shaded by iron, earth and tobacco elements. Supple yet well-structured, this should come together soon. Shows terrific harmony and length. 

95 Decanter (Michaela Morris, Feb.11, 2019)

San Lorenzo is the most representative wine of Castello di Ama. Rather than a single vineyard, it's a selection across all four of the estate's sites from more mature vines with an average age of 20-25 years old. Winter mint, anise and tobacco are laced through the wine, mingling with vanilla nuances. The fruit is dense, dark and powerful in the mouth but there's a plushness on the mid-palate that lends a seductive edge. Magnificent velvety tannins keep it all in check while the finishes lingers graciously.

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is a blend taken from Ama's four core estate vineyards. Black cherry, graphite, sage, mint, juniper berries and licorice give the San Lorenzo a distinctly dark, brooding profile to match its powerful feel. The big tannins need time to soften, but there is certainly plenty to look forward to. Stylistically, San Lorenzo is closest to Bellavista, with which it shares a decidedly somber feel. This is such a gorgeous wine"

De geschiedenis van Castello di Ama start in de jaren zeventig. Een aantal families kocht een gehucht met historische wijngaarden, met als doel deze in ere te herstellen. Lorenza Sebasti Pallanti, een van de oprichters, is de huidige eigenaresse en samen met haar man en wijnmaker Marco Pallanti heeft zij Castello di Ama tot een van de meest prestigieuze wijndomeinen van Italië gemaakt. In 2003 werd Marco uitgeroepen tot Wijnmaker van het Jaar door Guida Vini d’Italia van Gambero Rosso. Zijn wijnen behoren tot de meest gezochte uit de streek en sieren wijnkaarten van de beste restaurants van de wereld. Het vlaggenschip is de klassieke Chianti Classico San Lorenzo, maar Castello di Ama is misschien wel beroemder om zijn Super Tuscan L’Apparita, de eerste wijn van 100% merlot uit Toscane. De olijfboomgaarden van Castello di Ama liggen op hellingen tussen 450 tot 500 meter hoogte: het gedeelte waar de wijnstokken net niet optimaal gedijen, maar de olijfbomen des te beter. Deze worden streng en laag gesnoeid zodat de oogst klein en constant evenwichtig is en de plukkers er makkelijk bij kunnen. Dat deze productiewijze weinig rendement oplevert, blijkt uit het feit dat er minder dan een liter olijfolie per olijfboom wordt geoogst. Castello di Ama heeft 8397 olijfbomen.
